What does the Degree in Psychology offer?

In this degree, you will study different aspects related to human behaviour, neuroscience, research, and psychology applied to different areas, including education, employment, health, and social intervention.

The scope and application of psychology have expanded in recent and today there is increasing social demand for psychologists and psychological techniques. In addition to more traditional fields, such as clinical practice, education, social intervention, and employment, psychology encompasses diverse areas such as sport, communication, coaching, advertising, and marketing.

The Degree in Psychology provides students with the scientific knowledge required to understand and explain human behaviour, as well as the basic skills to carry out psychological assessments, diagnoses and interventions.

The objectives of this degree programme are based on the following general principles:

Competences

  • To possess and understand the knowledge that defines psychology as a scientific discipline, including its theories, methods, and scopes of application, supported by documents and advanced texts related to specific knowledge from the latest research in the field.
  • To know how to apply this knowledge to your work in a professional manner by producing and defending arguments, while also identifying, articulating and solving problems. To be qualified to work as a professional psychologist at a general and non-specialised level.
  • To be able to collect and interpret relevant data related to the individual and social behaviour of humans, and to the contexts in which these behaviours are produced, to make decisions and express opinions related to social, scientific or ethical issues in psychological contexts.
  • To be able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions related to issues of human behaviour to specialists and the general public.
  • To develop the necessary learning skills to further your training with a high degree of autonomy, for example, through master’s programmes in psychology to enhance your advanced academic and research skills.

Professions for psychologists

Professions for Psychology Degree graduates:

  • Clinical and Health Psychology: private consultation centres, public mental health centres, hospitals, occupational health centres, and emergency care units.
  • Educational psychology: public and private schools, teams of public institutions, and private consultation centres.
  • Social psychology: public social service centres, specialised centres, NGOs (for children, youths, elderly people, women, people with disabilities, immigrants, etc.), and development cooperation services.
  • Industrial and organisational psychology: companies and departments of employment guidance, personnel selection, training, personnel management, and prevention of occupational hazards.
  • Legal psychology: courts, forensic clinics (children, families, prison supervision courts, and duty courts), prisons, victim support units, private consultations with experts, forensic specialists, advisors and mediators.

Postgraduate and specialisation courses for psychology graduates

After obtaining a Degree in Psychology, graduates have different options to further their training:

  • Specialised postgraduate programmes
    • Master's Degrees offer an advanced level of training based on academic and professional specialisation and research.
    • PhD studies offer graduates advance training in research. Its duration is not established based on credits. The PhD programme comprises a period of training and a period of research (thesis).
  • Participating in specialisation and continuing education courses.

Active and constructive methodology

We use an active and constructive methodology based on the principles of student-centred learning. This active and participatory approach involves planning and developing training actions that foster independent learning.

These methodologies enable students to learn and experiment with useful tools and resources for their future teaching careers, such as:

  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL): PBL allows students to learn from real situations through analysis and joint reflection with other students, and the creation of specific actions.
  • Cooperative learning: Strong teamwork skills are valued highly by students and employers. This learning model helps students to develop basic teamwork skills, work towards common goals, solve problems, and get the most out of cooperative learning.
  • Dialogic talks: This teaching resource is based on reading books and joint reflection. It enables students to connect new and existing knowledge, discover new ideas, listen to others, and enrich their own perspectives with the opinions of others.
  • Project-based learning and interdisciplinary activities: This methodology demonstrates that knowledge is not fragmented. Students learn to recognise the connections between different courses and subjects. This comprehensive perspective of learning is extremely useful for future teachers.

Internships in specialised centres and institutions

In the 4th year, students take internships in centres and organisations related to different branches of psychology to gain a better understanding of their future profession and to put into practice the knowledge and resources they have learnt in classes.

You will obtain meaningful and valuable experiences in clinical, social and educational centres and organisations to enhance your personal and professional development.

Organisation

CUCC holds collaboration agreements with public and private centres and institutions that implement programmes and initiatives related to the following areas: childhood, adolescence, adults, elderly people, drug addictions, disabilities and mental health, and community care programmes.

The practicum coordinators will offer guidance and support during your internship in the extensive network of centres located in the Community of Madrid and the province of Guadalajara.

Students can also apply to take internships in a different autonomous community or country. If you are interested in doing so, please contact the practicum coordinators.

The Practicum subject of the Social Education programme is organised as follows:

Every year, CUCC publishes a list of available places through an app. This list can be viewed for several days. Then, students choose ten centres in order of preference. Once the selection period has ended, students are assigned placements based on their preferences. If the number of applications exceeds the limit for a certain centre, placements will be assigned according to students’ average grade indicated in their academic transcript. Finally, there is a period during which students can present claims and/or specific adaptations based on the demands of the students and centres.

The internship is divided evenly between two centres. In this way, students can experience different fields of psychological intervention and put into practice a wider range of skills. In general, students stay at the first internship centre from January to March and the second from mid-March to May.

The allocation of internship placements is governed by different regional and university regulations.

Objectives
  • Practicum. This subject is taken in the 4th year. It enables students to experience for the first time the work carried out by healthcare institutions and organisations that offer psychological intervention programmes, such as schools, health centres and clinics, foundations, public and private institutions, companies, and NGOs. The practicum introduces students to the real contexts of the profession. You will experience and learn about different activities and procedures through observation and the guidance of psychology professionals. In addition, students have the chance to apply and test their knowledge and strategies acquired over four years in real professional contexts to prepare for their future careers.
Internship centres

As CUCC is linked to the University of Alcalá (UAH), students take their internships in centres in Madrid and the province of Guadalajara.

In addition, students can apply to take internships in centres outside the Community of Madrid or the province of Guadajalara (in other regions of Spain or abroad). If you are interested in doing so, please contact the practicum coordinators.

Methodology

During the internship, students are supervised by an academic tutor (from CUCC) and a collaborating tutor (from the internship centre). The collaborating tutor is responsible for planning and monitoring the student’s learning in a real working context. Meanwhile, the academic tutor monitors the student’s progress and provides guidance throughout the internship related to work and academic tasks.

The practicum is organised as follows:

  • Preparation and professional guidance phase (5% = 15 face-to-face hours): This phase consists of introductory lectures and seminars. Professional guidance is offered through round table discussions, lectures and workshops. Final year students can obtain professional advice and explore different employment options related to their studies.
  • Implementation phase (80% = 240 face-to-face hours): This phase consists primarily of practical activities in different public and private centres and institutions affiliated with the UAH by official agreements. The activities carried out by students are related to:
    • Knowledge and analysis of the professional environment.
    • Identification of the characteristic activities of psychologists in a specific environment.
    • Observation and critical analysis of psychological practices and professional behaviour.
    • Knowledge of procedures and protocols, as well as the use of psychological instruments and tools.
    • Identification (in oneself and others) of the necessary skills to work as a psychologist.
  • Monitoring phase (5% = 15 face-to-face hours): Students are monitored to assess their integration in the internship centres. In addition, students are encouraged to reflect upon their experience in order to get the most out of the internship.
  • Assessment phase (10% = 30 hours of independent study):

This phase involves preparing and writing a practicum report and learning journal. Students must include a description and assessment of the activities carried out at CUCC and the internships centres, as well as other documents and materials that demonstrate the practical knowledge they have acquired.

Tutorials

The CUCC tutor will maintain contact with the students throughout the internship, monitoring their performance in the practicum school, as well as in the previous and simultaneous sessions.

Assessment

Assessment is based on three components:

  • External assessment by the school tutor.
  • Internal assessment by the CUCC Practicum tutor.
  • Self-assessment by the student.

Psychologist profile

To become a psychologist and dedicate yourself to one of the most rewarding professions in the world, you should have:

  • An interest in aspects related to human behaviour, the human mind, and working with people.

  • A desire to learn about aspects related to health and quality of life. 
  • The ability to analyse and diagnose problems and propose solutions.

Access routes

Official Degree Programmes can be accessed by holders of the following qualifications:

  • Secondary school certificate (LOMCE) and university entrance exam (EvAU)
  • Higher Technician Diploma (FP II).
  • Certificate from Foreign Education Systems.
  • University degrees.
  • Partial university studies.
  • Students from previous legislation (LOE, LOGSE, COU, PREU or equivalent) and the PAU university entrance exam.
  • People over the age of 25 years.
  • People over the age of 40 years (with work experience).
  • People over the age of 45 years.

Registration and enrolment procedure

To study at a private centre like CUCC, you must follow the General Admission Procedure of the Single University District of Madrid. Applicants must apply through the pre-enrolment application of the single university district of Madrid. You can list up to twelve degree programmes in order of preference at public universities and affiliated centres of the Community of Madrid

The process involves three steps: 

  1. Pre-enrolling in the single district
  2. Consulting the admissions list
  3. Enrolling in the university where you are admitted
